Geolocation for check-ins

Geolocation for check-ins

You can now configure geofence for a location, in order to collect geographic information at the time of checking in, and prevent registrations attempted outside of the perimeter.

Nirovision will request someone's geolocation from their web browser, only when checking in to a site that requires this information. At no other time is the person's location being tracked.

This feature can be used in two modes:
  1. Collected, but not enforced - this is ideal for customers that want to monitor for inconsistencies, without stopping registrations.

  2. Collected and enforced - this is recommended for higher security onsite.

This document explains what access needs to be enabled, details how the entry process works when geolocations are being enforced, and step-by-step instructions to enable both modes of operation.

What needs to be enabled?

If geolocation is enabled on a Doorkeeper iPad, Location Services should be turned on on the device.

For anyone checking in using a mobile phone, Location Services should be turned on, and also Precise Location sharing should be enabled on their browser of choice. You'll find detailed instructions here.

Lastly, when checking into a location like this, the web browser will prompt the person to provide their location: "welcome.nirovision.com would like to use your current location".
  1. The individual must allow for this at that very moment.
  2. A link with further instructions is included with every prompt, to help find these settings.

How the entry process works with geolocation enabled

Geolocation can be enabled for both Doorkeeper kiosks and static QR sites.

The example below illustrates a static QR flow for a first-time visitor that has enabled location services and allowed for the geolocation check:

Conversely, the example below illustrates a static QR flow for a returning visitor that has not enabled location services.

Mode 1: Collected, but not enforced

This means that every person checking in will be asked to allow the prompt to validate their geolocation:
  1. If the location is provided, the person will be checked in regardless of the nature of the location provided (e.g. whether they are within the radius or out of it).
  2. If the location request is rejected, Location Services are disabled, or the device does not support geolocation (very old devices), the person will be stopped and not allowed to check in. Nirovision will record this check-in with a STOP status, accompanied by "Geolocation not provided" or "Geolocation not supported" based on what happens.

Setting up Mode 1

  1. Set up geolocations in the Web App 🖥️ , click on your company name in the top right corner and navigate to Settings > Location > General > Geolocation > Edit
    1. Find your address using the search bar.
    2. We recommend starting with 150m (default), and testing for a few days.
  2. Enable the geolocation collection for one or more groups: Settings > Location > Access Rules.
    1. You need to do this for every label you'd like to enable this on.
    2. Create a new rule or edit an existing one. In the Geolocation section, use the dropdown to:
      1. Require Geolocation On Check-in. This will open up another dropdown.
      2. On the second dropdown, select Do not validate geolocation.

Mode 2: Collected and enforced

This means that every person checking in will be asked to allow the prompt to validate their geolocation, and they will only be allowed to check in if the location provided is within the configured radius.

  • If the geolocation is provided and the person is within the geofence, the person will be checked in.

  • If the geolocation request is rejected, Location Services are disabled on the device, the device does not support geolocations (very old devices) or the person checking in is outside of the geofence, the person will be stopped and not allowed to check in. Nirovision will record this as a check in with status STOP, accompanied by "Geolocation not provided", "Geolocation not supported" or "Invalid Geolocation" based on what happened.

Setting up Mode 2

  1. Set up a geofence in the Web App 🖥️ , click on your company name on the top right corner and navigate to Settings > Location > General > Geolocation > Edit.
    1. Find your address using the search bar.
    2. We recommend starting with 150m (default), and testing for a few days.
  2. Enable the geolocation collection for one or more groups: Settings > Location > Access Rule.
    1. You need to do this for every label you'd like to enable this on.
    2. Create new rule or edit an existing one. In the Geolocation section, use the dropdown to:
      1. Require Geolocation On Check-in. This will open up another dropdown.
      2. On the second dropdown, select Require geolocation validation on Check In.
