How to use the Activity tab

How to use the Activity tab

Every time a face is detected on a Doorkeeper terminal or connected IP camera, it is processed by the Nirovision AI which provides a verdict on whether it matches an identity in your database.  Once a result is confirmed, a digital record is created in the Nirovision system that includes a timestamp, location and other metadata like check-ins, survey answers and triggered access control and alerts (if available).

The Activity view is the section of the Nirovision application that allows you to explore, review, filter, manage and export all recognition events.  In a nutshell, the Activity view gives you an overview of what is happening on your premises.

There are different subsections of Activity, that help focus your data to answer specific questions. There are also filters that help you navigate your data. This document explains how to get the most out of this view, so you can find the insights you are after, quicker.

1. People section

📍1.1. Check-ins

This screen focuses on check-in activity, within a time period.

On any given day, the first time someone presents to a Doorkeeper kiosk or IP camera, they'll be checked in, provided entry requirements are met as defined by the site's access rules . This creates a Check-In entry in the list that includes check-in time, location, temperature and survey answers (if available), triggers such as alarms and access control actions.

The next time this person is seen on Doorkeeper, they will be checked out. This action will update the original row to include check-out time, completing this entry and displaying total duration.

If this person appears in front of Doorkeeper again, they will be checked in again, creating a new row.

This view is:

  1. Sortable by status (Checked-In or Checked-Out).
  2. Viewable in List view only.

The Status column in this view indicates whether the person in question is Checked In, Checked Out, has something Pending to do or has been Stopped. If the individual is offered a document or survey to complete but they don't, the event's status will remain recorded as a Pending.

Detail view of people check-ins
The detail view of a check-in displays additional information of the check-in record. Clicking on any check-in record to access it, which will open up a side panel with this information:

📍1.4. Events

This section lists all recorded recognition events - including events that could not be matched to a profile, and events deemed of low quality (hidden by default).

This view focuses on event volume, within a time period. Think of it as a collection of raw logs.
  1. Sortable by time, or temperature (if enabled).
  2. Viewable in landscape and portrait mode. A flat list view is available too.
If your identities are labelled, the Activity graph will highlight groups with the most activity or allow you to spot unusual activity in a glimpse.

📍1.5. People Seen

This section focuses on distinct people seen, within a time period.

This view aggregates all events from known individuals within the selected time period and lists every distinct person seen, sorted from the person seen the most, to the person seen the least. This view only displays events that have been matched to an identity in Nirovision.

This view is:
  • Sortable by name, temperature or event count.
  • Viewable in List view only.

2. Vehicle section

📍2.1. Check-ins

This section focuses on vehicle check-in activity within a time period.

On any given day, the first time a vehicle presents itself in front of a boom gate or entrance with an IP camera in the entry lane, they'll be checked in, provided entry requirements are met as defined by the site's compliance rules. This creates a Check-in entry in the list that includes check-in time, and location.

The next time this vehicle is seen on a boom gate with an IP camera in the exit lane, it will be checked out. This action will update the original row to include check-out time, completing this entry and displaying the dwell time.

If the vehicle appears in front of a boom gate with an IP camera in the entry lane again, they will be checked in.

This view is viewable in List view and Landscape view.

Detail view of vehicle check-ins

The detail view of a check-in displays additional information of the check-in record. Clicking on any check-in record to access it, which will open up a side panel with these information:

  2. Dwell time of the vehicle.

📍2.2. Events

This section lists all recorded recognition events - including events that could not be matched to an vehicle profile.

Each event contains:
  1. the full thumbnail, plus a zoomed in view of the detected plate.
  2. if matched, the profile details including labels. If not matched, the detected plate.
  3. the location where the event was collected, the timestamp and any related triggers.

Events can be viewed in landscape and list modes.  This view is not sortable.

It aggregates all events from known vehicles within the selected time period and lists every distinct vehicle seen, sorted from vehicle seen the most to the vehicle seen the least. This view only displays vehicles that have been recognised and matched against a listed vehicle in Nirovision.

The view is:

  • vehicle plate, days onsite, events, first and last seen.
  • viewable in both list and thumbnail.

3. Layout settings

Use these settings to navigate and explore the Activity view, and also to prepare your data for export.

3.1. Sort & Order

All layouts allow for the ascending or descending ordering of events.

Each layout allows for the sorting of activity in different ways:
  1. The Events layout is sortable by time or temperature (if available).
  2. The Identities Seen layout is sortable by name, event count and temperature (if available).
  3. The Attendance layout is sortable by check-in status or name.
  4. The Check-Ins layout is sortable by status (checked-in or checked-out).

3.2. Focus

Because of its exploratory nature, the Events layout can be viewed in various formats. Switch between them for more or less context, using the dropdown menu located above the activity graph, on the right side of your screen:

  1. Landscape: shows the full-width frame of the event. This is helpful if you want to check out the surroundings.
  2. Portrait (default): focuses on the torso of the individual detected in the event. This is helpful to notice items of clothing or body shapes.
  3. List: loads a flat, list view with a row per event. Each row is illustrated with the face detected in the event.

3.3. Filters

Filters allow you to narrow down your activity to review within the applications or to export a subsection of your data.  Keep in mind that not all filters are available on all screens - and some only appear if you have the appropriate hardware or settings.

3.3.1. Location

For customers more than 1 location in their account, the location filter can be used to display activity on devices at only selected location(s).

3.3.2. Camera

If you have more than one IP camera or Doorkeeper terminal on your site, you can use this filter to only show activity generated from a specific device.

3.3.3. Labels

Labels can be used to filter your activity. Select one or more labels, to only display events of recognised individuals with that label(s) attached.

3.3.4. Person

This filter allows you to focus your activity on a specific individual, or on a specific recognition result type.

The Nirovision AI provides a verdict on every event it processes. Events are either a Match if an identity is confirmed or a No Match if the event does not meet the underlying recognition threshold.

However, not all No Matches are the same. In some cases, the event in question may have come very close to the recognition threshold - something that usually happens when the reference image in the identity isn't of very high quality.

  • If the event is very close to the threshold, it will be accompanied by a suggestion: "Might be Eliana".

  • If the event is close to the threshold, it will be accompanied by a hint: "1 similar" .

The Person filter options are:

  • Match: only displays activity matched against one or more identities.

  • Similar: only displays activity that has not been matched, but whose results are close enough to the recognition threshold to include a suggestion or hint.

  • No Match: displays all unmatched activity, including suggestions and hints.

  • Identity search bar & list: allows you to select one or more specific individuals, and focus your activity on them. This filter can be used in combination with the results filters above: if you select an identity and click to enable Similars, the Activity view will display all those events where the individual in question was not Matched but has been deemed similar.

3.3.5. Vehicle

This filter type allows you to focus your activity on a specific vehicle or specific recognition result type.

The Nirovision AI provides a verdict on every event if processes. Events are either a Match if a vehicle license plate is confirmed or a No Match if the event does not match any vehicle profile in Nirovision.

The vehicle filter options are:

  • Any plate : only displays vehicles where a plate has been recognised by Nirovision
  • Any profile : only displays vehicles that are matched against the specific vehicle profile in Nirovision entered in the provided search box.
  • All vehicles : displays all vehicle events recorded in Nirovision.
  • No profile : only displays vehicles that have not been matched against a vehicle profile in Nirovision.
  • No plate : only displays events that Nirovision AI recorded of vehicle but does not match the characteristics of a plate.

3.3.6. Status

Status shows the user's current check-in stage.

  • Checked In: someone has checked in using Doorkeeper Pro or Lite, or checked in by an Admin.

  • Checked Out: someone who was checked in, has checked out using Doorkeeper, or by an automated process or Admin (details included in the check-in event's detail view).

  • Stopped: someone was told to stop because they did not meet the entry requirements, as defined by the site's access rules.

  • Pending: if the person attempting to check in needs to complete a survey or submit a document, Doorkeeper will ask them to Wait, so their check-in entry will appear with a Pending status.

    • Wait should be a transient state and convert to an In if the person completes their entry conditions successfully or a Stopped if they fail one or more. Entries that remain as Pending indicate the person abandoned the check-in process before completing it.

    • We hide check-ins with Pending status by default. This filter option displays them for audit purposes.

The check-ins icon 🪪 is displayed on check-ins collected by Doorkeeper Pro.

3.3.7. Check-out

Check out filter allows you to identify between automatic and manually set check-out activity. This filter helps with adjusting check-out times if it people were automatically checked out.

3.3.8. Quality

Every time a face is detected via Doorkeeper or IP cameras, it is assigned a quality metric based on pose, sharpness, brightness, pixel variance, and size. Face quality is directly correlated with the quality of your recognition results .

  • High quality: events with high-quality faces are clear, sharp and big enough to display facial features in detail. We strongly recommend using high-quality faces for Identities.

  • Medium quality: IP camera-generated events generally fall in this category.

  • Low quality: we hide low-quality events by default, and we don't run recognition on them. They can be useful for finding unmatched activity via hints and suggestions.

  • User updated: this filter highlights events edited by an Admin.

3.3.9. Trigger

A trigger is an action derived from a recognition result. The trigger filter shows the events that have generated an alert or have opened a door via an access control integration.

There are two trigger filters available to narrow down your Activity:

  • Alarm: to list events that sent an alert, based on a configured alarm.

  • Access Control: if an access control integration is enabled, this filter will display events that yielded an access control outcome (e.g. opening a door).

  • Ambiguous: If an activity is matched against two or more profiles, it will be flagged as Ambiguous, the detail view will show which profiles were involved, so you can merge them or delete one.

    ambiguous match

  • Spoof attempt: If liveness detection is enabled on a Doorkeeper, it will record any spoof attempts where someone uses an image of a person to try to check-in and Nirovision detects it.

  1. Exclusion Zone: If a person was detected entering an area designated as an exclusion zone, the recorded event will appear when the Exclusion zone filter has been selected.
The alarm's icon 🔔 is displayed on events that have one or more associated triggers. Click on any event to open its detailed view and gather more insights about what happened.

3.3.10. Temperature

If you have a thermal camera or thermometer paired to Nirovision, you can use this filter to display events with a temperature result associated.

  1. Any: shows any event with a temperature result attached.
  2. Pre-defined values: shows events with a temperature result equal to or higher than the value selected.
  3. Custom: use this filter to enter a custom temperature value to filter on.

3.4. Export

You can export a .CSV of your activity, filtered or unfiltered. You can export activity from the Check-Ins, Attendance and Events sections.

To export a CSV, look for the export button located in the navigation section.

  1. Learn how to export Check-ins.
  2. Learn how to export Attendance.

3.5. Time Selector

The time selected located above the graph allows you to view a selection of events based on the time frame of an hour, day, week or month. You can also navigate using the arrows, and the calendar field.

3.6. Graph

The activity graph is located in the insight section at the top of the page, presented as a bar chart that displays the activity collected within the selected time frame.

The graph is coloured by the labels associated with matched activity. The graph displays activity from unlabelled identities and unmatched results with a striped pattern.

How to interact with the Activity Graph:

  1. Hover over each bar to get a summary of recorded events per label within the selected time frame.
  2. Click on a bar to navigate from Months to Weeks > Days > Hours. You can also use the buttons.
  3. Clicking on the calendar icon will bring you straight to the day's view of the current day.
